Our new season begins on Monday September 18th with a recital by the Roscoe Piano Trio.

Martin Roscoe, one of Britain’s most distinguished pianists, has been associated with Penrith Music Club for more than thirty years and gave valuable assistance in the purchase of our Steinway grand piano in 1997. Since then he has given several solo recitals, the most recent one two years ago on the resumption of our concerts after the pandemic.

In this opening concert Martin will be joined by Fenella Fielding (violin) and Jessica Burroughs (cello). Winner of BBC Music Magazine’s 2018 instrumental award, Fenella enjoys a busy career as a soloist and chamber musician. Alongside her position as principal cellist with Opera North, Jessica performs regularly as a soloist and in chamber music. Formed in 2018, the Roscoe Piano Trio will be performing works by Frank Bridge, Mendelssohn and Beethoven.

Frank Bridge was an under-rated composer of the early years of the 20th century and taught Benjamin Britten, who held him in great respect. He wrote a series of Phantasies for chamber ensembles, of which the Phantasie Trio, written in 1907, is the best known. Mendelssohn’s Piano Trio no.1 in D minor is one of his most popular chamber works. First performed in 1840, it was praised by Robert Schumann as “the master-trio of our time”.

The final work in the concert is one of the greatest piano trios ever written, the sublime “Archduke” Trio in B flat major, written in 1811 and dedicated to Archduke Rudolph, one of Beethoven’s most valued patrons. One of Beethoven’s most popular pieces of chamber music, it will form an excellent climax to the season’s opening concert.
